The UK Quality Code for Higher Education

When creating this manual, we have been guided by the UK Quality Code for Higher Education: A Brief Guide and particularly by the various sections of the UK Quality Code for Higher Education (hereinafter referred to as ‘the Quality Code’) available under the same link.

The Quality Code gives all higher education providers a shared starting point for setting, describing and assuring the academic standards of their higher education awards and programmes and the quality of the learning opportunities they provide. Providers such as us use it to design our respective policies for maintaining academic standards and quality.

The Quality Code has three Parts – academic standardsacademic quality and information about higher education provision. Each of these is subdivided into Chapters covering specific themes.

Within Chapters in each Part, the Quality Code refers to ‘Expectations’ which higher education providers are required to meet, and gives ‘Indicators’ that are examples that, if followed by a Provider, would indicate that a Provider meets the relevant ‘Expectation’.

Throughout our QEM, we highlight the appropriate Expectation(s) for the area that is being covered and refer the reader to further information from the Quality Code that provides relevant Indicator(s). The QEM is a resource for our staff and students, and for staff, in particular, we promote engagement with the Quality Code by making reference to Expectations and then directing the reader to relevant Chapter(s) in the Quality Code which provide details of appropriate Indicators. Staff are provided with Staff Development sessions on the content of the QEM together with an overview of the Quality Code itself so that they develop their thinking and understanding of Expectations and Indicators and how these fit in with the Institution and their own roles.
