Crucial Conversations

Launching 7 October, Crucial Conversations is a one-of-a-kind course run by the voice of Channel 4, Barra Fitzgibbon.

The course, available to all Level 4 students from all subjects, will focus around one important conversation in your life. You may not even know what this conversation is yet, but with Barra’s know-how and guidance, you’ll learn how to tackle this potentially tricky exchange that could change your life.

Crucial Conversations is run alongside your other classes and is 11 weeks long, with 6 hours of classes a week. You’ll have 2 hours each of lecture, seminar and workshop.

At the end of the course, you’ll have discovered the importance of face-to-face communication and your own true voice. This will not only positively affect your work and personal relationships, but will teach you a life-long lesson of how to nourish your own mental health.

So how do I apply?

We’re not looking for perfect grades or a long list of work experience. We’re looking for creativity, personality, uniqueness, something to get us hooked.

To apply, all you need to do is…

  1.  Write and record a voice over introduction to one of your favourite shows or films, no more than 20 seconds long. This can be a video or audio recording, on your phone or camera. Don’t worry, we won’t judge you on the quality of the recording.
  2.  And write a 50 word synopsis of the programme or film you’re introducing in an email or Word document.

It’s as easy as that! Check out the video below to hear more about what we’re looking for from Barra himself.

Email your video and introduction to barra.fitzgibbon@bil.ac.uk.

If your video or audio file is too large to send over email, you can use WeTransfer. Simply add your file and send to Barra’s email address.

There’s only 20 spaces available on the course, so make sure your application stands out!

What next?

We’ll be in touch before 7 October letting you know if you’ve secured a place on the course or not. You’ll then be able to log onto Canvas to access the course material and weekly syllabus.

The course will take place every week – Monday 18:00-20:00, Wednesday 09:30-11:30 and Friday 09:30-11:30 – until Friday 13 December.

If you secure a place, and the course  clashes with your other classes, submit a timetable change via SSP and we’ll look to into fitting your other classes around the Crucial Conversations course.

Best of luck with your application!
